The Physics of Fanless Cooling

Moving parts are the enemy of reliability in industrial environments. Fans suck in dust, metallic shavings, and corrosive gases. They also bear mechanical bearings that inevitably fail. Fanless thermal design relies entirely on passive conduction and natural convection.

Core Concepts

Instead of blowing air across a heatsink, the entire chassis of a rugged PC is the heatsink. Components are thermally coupled directly to an extruded aluminum housing using specialized thermal pads or copper heat pipes.

TDP vs. Ambient Temperature

Thermal Design Power (TDP) indicates the maximum heat generated by the CPU. To cool a 65W CPU fanlessly at 60°C ambient requires massive surface area. This is why most fanless IPCs utilize mobile or embedded processors (15W to 35W TDP).

CPU ClassTypical TDPMax Operating Temp (Fanless)
Intel Atom / Celeron6W - 10W-40°C to 85°C
Intel Core i3/i5 (U-Series)15W-25°C to 70°C
Intel Core i7/i9 (Desktop)65W+Not recommended for true fanless without massive external heatsinks.
