Understanding IP Ratings in Harsh Environments
An industrial PC is only as reliable as its enclosure. The Ingress Protection (IP) rating system, defined in IEC 60529, classifies the degrees of protection provided against the intrusion of solid objects (including body parts like hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water in electrical enclosures.
The Rating Breakdown
The standard format is IPXX, where the first digit represents solid particle protection, and the second digit represents liquid ingress protection.
| 1st Digit (Solids) | Description | Relevance for IPCs |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Protected against objects >1mm | Standard desktop PC (not industrial) |
| 5 | Dust protected | Typical fanless industrial PC. Dust may enter but won't interfere with operation. |
| 6 | Dust tight | Required for mining, milling, and heavy particulate environments. Complete vacuum seal. |
| 2nd Digit (Liquids) | Description | Relevance for IPCs |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | Splashing water | General factory floor protection against accidental spills. |
| 5 | Water jets | Washdown areas using low-pressure hoses. |
| 6 | Powerful water jets | Marine environments, shipboard deployment. |
| 7 | Immersion up to 1m | Extreme outdoor, flood-prone deployments. |
| 9K | High temp/pressure jets | Food and beverage processing (CIP - Clean in Place). Requires specialized stainless steel enclosures. |
Common Industrial PC IP Ratings
- IP40: Entry-level industrial gateways. No water protection.
- IP65: The standard for panel PCs on a factory floor. Dust tight and protected from low-pressure jets.
- IP69K: The ultimate washdown spec. Essential for abattoirs, dairy processing, and sterile pharmaceutical lines.
