Surviving the Shakes: Vibration Resistance in IPCs
Mounting a computer to a CNC machine, a locomotive, or a mining excavator subjects it to relentless vibration. Without proper design, connectors vibrate loose, hard drive platters crash, and motherboard traces crack.
The MIL-STD-810G Standard
Originally a military standard, 810G (Method 514.6) is the gold standard for rugged tech. It involves testing the device across multiple axes against specific random vibration profiles that simulate transport (trucks, aircraft) and operational environments.
Design Mitigations
- Cableless Design: Removing internal cabling and replacing them with solid board-to-board connectors eliminates the primary point of vibration failure.
- Conformal Coating: A thin polymeric film applied to the PCB to protect against moisture and reinforce delicate surface-mount components.
- M12 Connectors: Traditional RJ45 or USB ports will vibrate out. M12 threaded connectors physically lock the cable to the chassis.
